UCI Considers Amnesty; Ullrich May Lose Olympic Gold
By Jessica | Permalink |Here are a couple tidbits I found, both related to doping…
First, the UCI is considering amnesty for riders who admit doping. This is huge. It sucks, in a way, that there will always be this cloud over some years because guys “got away with it,” but the alternative (going back and re-figuring who really won things) is either impossible or close to it. It’ll be interesting to see what the UCI decides.
Second, Jan Ullrich might have to give up the gold medal he won in Sydney in 2000. (The article is in Italian, and I’m not translating the whole thing, so forgive my translation mishaps.) Jacques Rogge of the International Olympic Committee has said that he’s not ruling out the possibility that they’d take away the medal, although it doesn’t sound like any moves have been made in that direction. Alexandre Vinokourov got 2nd in Sydney, and Andreas Kloeden got 3rd (all three having been on Team Telekom at the time will probably make it necessary to go even further down the list). Ullrich got silver in the time trial, which would also be revoked if they take away the gold, and Lance Armstrong was in 3rd in that race.
