I Need a New Cyclist to Love

heartsYou may recall my girlish fascination (to put it mildly) with Ivan Basso (who I still think is un figo), but then he got a 2-year suspension. Then I began to have a fondness for Alessandro Petacchi, whose raw emotions when he’s riding have always been charming to me. (Anyone who cries when he wins Milano-Sanremo is cool in my book.) But now even he’s looking at some suspension time after using a smidge too much of his asthma drug. What is a girl to do these days, with all her favorite Italian riders falling from pedestals left and right?!?

So, I’m on the lookout for a new guy to follow in the peloton. It’d be a big plus if he were also Italian, but I’m losing hope on that front…

I’m a huge fan of both Jens Voigt and Dave Zabriskie, but I don’t get weak in the knees when I think of them… And I’ll admit that it’s easier to get really giddy about a rider when he’s got that special combination of both athletic prowess and cuteness. (What do you want, I’m a girl!) So, help me figure out who can take Ivan’s place for the next 2 years while he serves his suspension. Any suggestions?

How about Christophe Moreau? Sure, he was on the Festina team, but his image has never suffered because of that. Sure, he’s French, but the French are definitely riding cleaner than the Italians and Spanish at this point. He’s definitely not ugly. (I never say a dude is handsome, or anything like that!) Plus, he is hot right now with his recent French Championship and Dauphine Libere win. What do you think?

Unfortunately, I think Moreau is kind of an ass, and I can’t like riders who I think are asses. Take Levi or Robbie McEwen - they’re both good riders, but I don’t like either personality so I’m not a fan. As for French riders, my personal fave is Thomas Voeckler - that kid has heart.

Okay, to get back to Italians, which you have a weakness for, how about Daniele Bennati. Check out this photo http://www.cyclismag.com/photos/bennati_20060224060225.jpg

What do you think?

Okay, NOW you are TALKING. And I’ve been wanting to cheer for Lampre ever since I noticed they’re sponsored (in part) by Oregon Scientific. Not that I care about the company, per se, but it’s cool seeing the name of the state I’m in on a pro cycling jersey. Yes, Brett, I think Signore Bennati is a serious contender.

lol.

I have liked Cunego over the years, too. I guess I should cheer for Lampre-Fondital, too, since I am a Mechanical guy. Lampre makes aluminum and Fondital makes radiators…

I dunno… Bennati looks like he’s about 12 to me…

[…] (With this performance, on top of all his others and his wonderful-seeming demeanor, Cancellara is rapidly becoming my new favorite cyclist.) […]
