Tirreno-Adriatico: Riccò Wins Stage 3, Basso Crashes

The young Italian Riccardo Riccò (Saunier Duval) has won stage three of the Tirreno-Adriatico, one of the race’s toughest stages, over some big names in the sport - Alexander Vinokourov and Andreas Klöden (both of Astana) came second and third on the day. Alexandr Arekeev is still in the leader’s jersey. You’ll be able to read a report on the stage later at CyclingNews here, but do check out Riccò’s baby face at La Gazzetta here.

The bad news, according to La Gazzetta, is that Tour de France favorite (and My Boyfriend) Ivan Basso apparently was involved in a crash immediately after the finish. He was taken to the hospital for x-rays to his left wrist. Poverino!

UPDATE: Now this is a fantastic picture. Looks like he was lucky to hold off that pack, eh?

And this from CyclingNews:

Crashes in the finale involved two Italian stars; World Champion Paolo Bettini (Quickstep-Innergetic) was forced to put his foot down, while Ivan Basso (Discovery Channel) was worse off. He remounted and continued to the finish at his own pace.

After the stage he was taken to the hospital where x-rays were performed on his left wrist. No break was shown on the examination, but it is unknown whether Basso will take the start for stage four.
