Tirreno-Adriatico: Fernández’s 1st Pro Win, Klöden Wins Overall
By Jessica | Permalink |
A Spanish rider has gotten the first victory of his professional career in Tirreno-Adriatico’s final stage. 25-year-old Kolbo Fernández (Euskaltel-Euksadi) has been a pro since 2004, but this is is first win. The end of today’s stage profile was flat as a pancake, so obviously the sprinter’s teams were up at the front - but a last minute rush by a third team caused confusion in the bunch, allowing Fernández to get away. He beat racing veteran Stuart O’Grady to the line, so this kid might be one to watch.
There was no change at the top of the leaderboard, so Germany’s Andreas Klöden takes home the overall victory in this year’s Tirreno-Adriatico - it’s his first stage race victory in his new Astana colors. It’s a shame we couldn’t watch it here in the US, and I’m hoping (against hope?) that this doesn’t mean we’ll have problems seeing all of the Italian races… No Milano-Sanremo? No Giro d’Italia? That would be bad. Very bad. Podium Cafe poses the question of whether Cycling.tv will carry the races, and one of the commentators (Anthony McCrossan) assures us in the comments that they will, but there are still a few questions left to be answered.
The results on today’s stage:
1 Koldo Fernández (Spa) Euskaltel-Euskadi
2 Stuart O’Grady (Aus) Team CSC
3 Gabriele Balducci (Ita) Acqua & Sapone-Caffè Mokambo
4 Maximiliano Richeze (Arg) Ceramica Panaria-Navigare
5 Allan Davis (Aus) Discovery Channel
6 Danilo Napolitano (Ita) Lampre-Fondital
And here’s where you’ll eventually find the CyclingNews writeup.
