Tirreno-Adriatico: Arekeev wins the stage, takes the lead
By Jessica | Permalink |
A young Russian by the name of Alexandr Arekeev left his breakaway companions (after having ridden with them for 200km) with 13km to go, and managed to keep them all at bay. The Acqua & Sapone rider not only won stage two of Tirreno-Adriatico, he’s also climbed into the leader’s jersey.
That’s all I’ve got so far, and that’s translated from La Gazzetta.
UPDATE: Here’s the CyclingNews report, and the top ten on GC:
1 Alexandr Arekeev (Rus) Acqua & Sapone-Caffè Mokambo 9.25.52
2 Daniele Contrini (Ita) Tinkoff Credit Systems 0.32
3 Sven Krauss (Ger) Gerolsteiner 0.35
4 Fortunato Baliani (Ita) Ceramica Panaria-Navigare 0.42
5 Robbie McEwen (Aus) Predictor-Lotto 0.57
6 Oscar Freire (Spa) Rabobank 1.01
7 Thor Hushovd (Nor) Crédit Agricole 1.03
8 Beñat Albizuri (Spa) Euskaltel-Euskadi 1.04
9 Matteo Priamo (Ita) Ceramica Panaria-Navigare 1.05
10 Bernhard Eisel (Aut) T-Mobile 1.07
Also, it’s the week of weird finishes, apparently - after Tom Boonen’s accidental second-place salute yesterday in Paris-Nice, we now have Bernhard Eisel’s accidental fifth-place salute today in Tirreno-Adriatico. In both cases, the saluters obviously thought there wasn’t anybody else up the road. It’s just strange - you don’t often see that, especially in these days of hi-tech communication between riders and team cars, and then we get two days in a row. I think tomorrow everyone in both races should salute as they come over the line. Y’know, just so Boonen and Eisel don’t feel so funny about it.
