Reliving the Salzburg World Championships

While browsing YouTube for cycling videos (read: procrastinating on something else) I found this gem of a video of the last kilometer of the elite men’s race in Salzburg last September. At the time, we were in the Italian federation’s tent on top of one of the climbs, watching all this unfold on television, so it’s great to have a chance to relive the moment. Until I watched this video, in fact, I hadn’t even noticed that coming into the final turn the wily Paolo Bettini was tucked neatly in behind the big German, Erik Zabel, just waiting for the chance to attack. And when he did attack, it appears he had to cut between Zabel and (I think) Valverde. It was a great move, and it’s great fun to watch it again.

I got plenty of pictures of the elated Italian crowd in the Italian tent, but now I wish I’d had a video camera going at the same time - though I’m not sure it could have handled the decibels.
