Hushovd Finally Gets His First 2007 Win

thorI’ll admit that I’ve got a tendency toward groupie-ism, so when the husband and I were flying back from Salzburg last year after the World Championships I did a triple-take when it looked like Thor Hushovd was waiting to board the same plane we were. Turns out it was Thor, and although we couldn’t chat with him during the long flight (cycling superstars get to sit in business class), we did grab an opportunity after passport control to say hello and shake his hand. He was traveling with his wife (just as gorgeous and blonde as he is, in case you were wondering), and they were both utterly charming and full of smiles.

So it warmed my heart to see Hushovd finally kick his season into high gear today with an excellent stage win. I’d have loved to have had a radio tuned to whatever Robbie Hunter was saying as he crossed the line in second place, gesticulating wildly and slamming his fist on the handlebars. That was one unhappy dude. Hushovd, on the other hand, actually seemed more relieved than happy with his win, and I hope this is a sign that he’s returning to his old form.

(Incidentally, Thor is also my mother-in-law’s and sister-in-law’s favorite cyclist, and it’s only partly because he’s a good sprinter, ifyaknowhaddimean… Frankly, until I met him last year I’d thought, “Yeah, he’s cute, but really?” After meeting him, I understand their fascination completely. Yep.)
