Bettini Planning to “Court” Tour of Flanders

I can’t remember why I first thought I didn’t like Paolo Bettini much. I’m generally a fan of the Italians, even when they’re brash and egotistical (let’s face it, they’re good at both). Still, for whatever reason, Bettini has annoyed me for a few years. I wish I could remember why… At any rate, after I was there to see him win Worlds last year, surrounded by happy Italians, I’ve softened a little bit toward Paolo. (And, of course, after the death of his brother I think most people did the same.)
Bettini is gearing up for the 2007 season with the World Champion’s rainbow across his chest, and he’ll begin by riding the Tour of California next month (how many shades of jealous am I that Bob will be going?). California will merely be a continued part of his training, though, as he’s got his sights set on loftier (and European) goals - including the Tour of Flanders.
“Flanders,” says Bettini, in true Italian style, “is like a beautiful woman. So, it is like I am not an example of beauty, and my build is not so adapted to this course. I have to work to come from behind; I have to court her.” And if that isn’t the quote of the day, I don’t know what is.
