Close encounters of the Ivan Basso kind?

Oh, my little heart is all a-flutter… Ivan Basso (known around my house as “my boyfriend” - it’s my husband who started calling him that, by the way) has signed a two-year contract with Nike. Have I mentioned that Nike headquarters is right here where I live? Oh, yes, I’m going to be sweet-talking my way into whatever press events The Smiling Assassin has in Beaverton, I can tell you that.

Ahem.

So, to get back to the actual news here, after signing with Lance Armstrong’s team, Basso has now signed with Armstrong’s sponsor. He has severed ties with his former personal sponsors (Sidi and Fuerteventura) in order to make the Nike deal happen. The entire Discovery Channel squad, however, is tied to an eyewear contract with Rudy Project.

Enough of that, what’s really important here is that Basso will be in Solvang, California from 22 January to 3 February for Discovery’s training camp, and is expected to make his season debut at the Tour of California starting on 18 February and ending on my birthday. There is absolutely no reason he couldn’t come up to Oregon either before or after the California trip, right? Right.

You hear that, Ivan?
