Slipstream Bolsters Roster with Former Paris-Roubaix Winner

slipstreamTeam Slipstream is gearing up for a spot in the 2008 Tour de France by signing Tour veterans like David Millar, Dave Zabriskie and Christian Vande Velde, but they’re apparently already thinking bigger than just le Grande Boucle. Team director Jonathan Vaughters says Slipstream has also signed a “former winner of Paris-Roubaix,” but wouldn’t say which one. CyclingNews listed the five guys who have both won the Hell of the North and have not retired yet as: Stuart O’Grady (2007), Fabian Cancellara (2006), Tom Boonen (2005), Magnus Backstedt (2004), and Peter Van Petegem (2003). Any one of those riders would be a great addition to a team working on raising its stature on the world stage, but personally I’d love to see Tom Boonen take all his anti-doping energy to a team like Slipstream. Vaughters also confirmed that the team has been talking with Axel Merckx, who is supposed to retire this year. I imagine we’ll see in the coming days who else will be wearing Slipstream’s argyle kit.
