Scarponi, Basso Questioned in Rome - Scarponi Offers DNA

By Jessica | Permalink | No Comments | May 2nd, 2007 | Trackback

bassoMichele Scarponi appeared before the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) today to answer questions, and he agreed to give a DNA sample. Scarponi was questioned for an hour and a half in Rome, and came out saying, “They didn’t hit me with anything new, but I was called here because last year I was registered in Spain (with the Liberty Seguros team, which became Astana), while in 2007 I’m back in Italy. I therefore had to be heard for the first time by the anti-doping public prosecutor.”

Ivan Basso, who was originally supposed to be the only one appearing before CONI today, was questioned for almost two hours before they postponed his actual hearing for a date to be determined in the future. Basso’s lawyer said Basso answered the questions he was asked, and was “calm.” Now that Basso is without a team, this delay probably doesn’t seem as heart-breaking as it otherwise might. Still, the sooner this is resolved the better it will be for everyone involved in cycling.

You can read more about the hearings in Rome today here and here (the latter in Italian).
