Petacchi “Suspended” by Milram
By Jessica | Permalink |
Oh, the humanity! How is a cycling enthusiast like myself who happens to have a thang for Italian cyclists supposed to cheer for anyone anymore?
First my beloved Ivan Basso, a guy I figured was totally on the level and would never stoop so low as to get mixed up in doping, turns out to be joined at the hip with the Operacion Puerto scandal and gets suspended for two years.
And now Alessandro Petacchi, whose tear-filled win at Milano-Sanremo a couple years ago actually had me choked up, is kinda-sorta suspended by his Milram team after a “non-negatve” test during the Giro d’Italia this year. It seems that his asthma medication might be to blame, but it also seems that if it were that simple it would not have come to a suspension.
This is not good, folks. I really hope there’s more smoke here than fire, but I’m quickly losing my ability to be optimistic. I think that’s also called “becoming jaded.” Dammit.

If the UCI is not careful, they are going to overkill this doping thing and run many of us fans away from the sport by trying to demonstrate their zero tolerance philosophy. They also need to find a way to have the testing and reporting performed by people who know how to keep their mouths shut until some official announcement is made.
