Landis to Appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport

landisWell, whatever else you want to say about Floyd Landis, you can’t say he’s not a fighter.

Landis has decided to appeal the recent decision to strip him of his 2006 Tour de France title for using testosterone. This last effort, an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, will likely determine the course of the rest of Landis’ career - although most people have already given up hoping that anything will change.

As it stands now, the UCI has declared that Oscar Pereiro is the winner of the 2006 Tour, and they’ll give him his yellow jersey at a ceremony in Madrid on Monday. While that’s better than receiving the golden fleece in the mail, it’s certainly less of a thrill than standing on the Champs-Elysees hearing your national anthem playing while you don cycling’s most coveted jersey.

People like to highlight that if Landis loses his appeal to CAS, he’ll be the first cyclist in the history of the Tour to lose his title because of doping. But he might end up with company in the not too distant future, as more and more retired athletes come out and admit to doping during the peak of their careers (Bjarne Riis comes to mind, as would Jan Ullrich if he’d ever come out of the closet on this issue).

Cycling isn’t out of the woods yet, not by a long shot.
