ASO & UCI: Both willing to kill the baby

The ASO/UCI thing is getting out of hand. I never would have thought a race like Paris-Nice would be in jeopardy of not being run, and yet here we are… A few weeks away from the start, and we’ve got apparently a whopping six teams riding the legendary race. This is a sad state of affairs.

From around the web, some commentary on this crazy dispute:

  • An overview of several of the stories in this cluster-you-know-what are at CyclingNews.
  • VeloNews is reporting that the riders’ association is unhappy about the UCI/ASO spat. Understandably so.
  • Perhaps my favorite snippet comes from Podium Cafe, which asks, “What did we do to deserve Pat McQuaid?”

This reminds me of a story where two women both claimed they were the mother of one baby. They argued about it until the village arbiter of justice said, “Well, we’ll cut the baby in half and you can each have an equal part.” One woman said that was fine and fair. The other, weeping, said, “No, no, don’t cut the baby, she can have him.” The arbiter then gave the baby to the woman who’d refused to cut the baby in half, since it was clear - she was obviously the mother, as her foremost thoughts were for the baby’s welfare rather than her own claim of motherhood.

What the ASO and UCI fail to recognize is that this argument they’re so wrapped up in is going to affect more than just their own stupid rivalry. The baby here is the Race to the Sun itself, Paris-Nice, which apparently doesn’t have an advocate who’s willing to sacrifice their stance in order to save the race. This really sucks.
