Just a couple more days until Le Tour… Who’s excited?

  • Is it refreshing to have the Tour starting in a country whose population may not even know much about the sport? To me, the answer is yes - it means they’ll just cheer on riders without wondering who’s doping and who’s not.
  • So, if Mazzoleni is out of the Tour and his case is finally being heard, does that mean he’ll be stripped of his Giro podium spot? The one he shouldn’t even have been allowed to get, because he shouldn’t have been allowed to race?
  • Petacchi says he used his asthma inhaler “in good faith,” which brings up the glaring problem of athletes abusing drugs for which they have the authorization to use. You can’t force a guy with asthma to race without his medication, so that he can compete on an even level with everyone else, but using medication to his advantage isn’t cool.
  • Phil Liggett is one of the reasons I came to love the sport of cycling. I don’t care how many names he screws up while he’s announcing - he’s amazing. And if you can’t get enough of him during the Versus coverage this month, you can always catch the Phil Liggett Daily Reports section of the website. You can also follow what Paul Sherwen has to say here, and what the irrepressible force that is Bob Roll is on about here.
  • Speaking of Dear Bob, here’s a little bit from him about how much he loves this sport.
  • Want to check out a bike race up close but aren’t fond of the high price of traveling in Europe? Try the Tour of Columbia on for size.
  • With delays in announcements about the Landis case, it’ll be awhile before we know who really won last year’s Tour.
  • Here is yet another example of a headline written by a moron. No, really? We need a clean race after last year? Y’don’t say…
  • If you just want to find some bike-friendly cities, Toronto has put out its 2007 Cycling Map of the city, and Denver is all about the crazy bikes and costumes this Saturday.
  • And finally, for a little fun, be sure to have a look-see through all the fun at Secrets of the Peloton - including the Plastic Peloton People. Because we all need to have a giggle right now, even if it is at the expense of this sport we adore.
