Around the Web on Wheels: 06.27.07

T-minus 10 days until the Tour begins, people. Just a few tidbits to tide you over until then.

  • In case you can’t get enough of Le Grande Boucle, you can track the Tour de France in Google Earth again this year. And, as the report indicates, by tilting the view you can see just how high those mountains are. No wonder those guys look so tired…
  • In case you were wondering, members of different cycling teams do have each others’ backs. Just ask the BMC team members who saved the Navigators’ souignuer from an attacker in her hotel room. Scary stuff, but it ended okay.
  • Danilo Di Luca is a true Italian - he signed a deal to take to the catwalk for Milan’s 2008 Fashion Week to strut his stuff in Byblos attire. Sorry, ladies, we’ll have to wait awhile for pictures.
  • A whopping six days before the start of the Tour de France in London, the city will have instituted a smoking ban in enclosed public places. So if you happen to notice lots of grumpy Londoners hanging around outside smoking, don’t be surprised - they might not be interested in the race, they might just be looking for a place to have a smoke.
  • Perennial Lance-hater David Walsh is back on the book-tour circuit again (does anyone else notice how his books always come out on the eve of the Tour?), singing the same old tune. At the same time, Floyd Landis’ book is also out. Frankly, neither one sounds all that compelling.
  • If you’re looking for a cycling-related book that doesn’t have anything to do with scandals, try this one.
  • According to this article, cycling in the UK “has never been so vibrant,” which is great leading up to the Grand Depart in London. Or is it all part of the Tour’s PR machine? Really, who can tell?
  • Despite all the trouble right now, Olympic committee president Jacques Rogge says cycling will stay in the Olympics. I know things are kind of grim, but was that ever really in question?
  • The title of this article just made me shake my head in sadness… “Doping Scandal Puts Dark Cloud Over Coverage of Tour de France.” Really? Y’think?!?!?
