Around the Web on Wheels: 05.13.07
By Jessica | Permalink |While we wait (im)patiently for the Versus coverage of today’s Giro stage 2, here are some other newsy bits for you to chew on. (I already peeked and saw who won stage 2, which you can do if you want by looking here - but then you’d be like me, the kid who can’t let Christmas morning be a surprise, and you don’t want to be that kid, do you?)
- Pat McQuaid, renowned for his wishy-washy statements when it comes to doping and suspected riders, lived up to his reputation on Saturday by lashing out at not only Ivan Basso, but at everyone who has supported him for the last year. I’m really still surprised we haven’t heard something similar from Dick Pound, but maybe he’s just too busy cackling hysterically to speak.
- Christian Prudhomme says that the Tour de France organization doesn’t consider Floyd Landis to be last year’s champion. This despite the ongoing legal battle around the case.
- The stage race between Montreal and Boston has been canceled for this year - not because of lack of support apparently, but because organizers didn’t want to put on a half-assed race this year when they could just wait until next year to debut something better.
- Yesterday’s winner of the maglia rosa apologizes for mistakenly jumping ahead of teammate Danilo Di Luca to grab the coveted jersey, and wants reporters to take him down off the cross they’ve made for him. For a still-frame glimpse at an angry Di Luca, check out this picture and this one.
And according to CyclingNews, at least one interpretation of what Di Luca was screaming at Gasparotto as they crossed the line was “Dove vai?” (Where are you going?) - but it looked like a significantly longer phrase than that. Perhaps including some expletives.
