It’s a gorgeous day here in Portland - I hope it’s pretty where you are.

  • Gerolsteiner had a devastating Milano-Sanremo - two riders were taken off in stretchers. David Kopp’s face was bloodied so he looked particularly bad, but in the end all he’s suffering from is a broken nose and swollen face. Andrea Moletta, on the other hand, wrapped himself around a lamppost and ended the day with a broken femur. Davide Rebellin, Heinrich Haussler and Fabian Wegmann also crashed during the race, but were able to get back up and keep ridiing. How much bad luck can one team suffer in a day?
  • A retired Australian cyclist has died in a horrific car accident in a Melbourne tunnel which also killed two other motorists. The crash is being investigated.
  • Like many of us who still haven’t seen one frame of film from yesterday’s Milano-Sanremo, Chris at Podium Cafe is wondering why Versus doesn’t carry many Italian races live. The husband says it’s because RAI is overly controlling. Whatever the reason, it’s annoying.
  • The Daily Peloton chat with Toyota-United’s Ivan Dominguez after he was eliminated from the Redlands Classic while leading the sprint competition.
  • Last year’s Milano-Sanremo winner, Pippo Pozzatto, had a special bike for yesterday’s MSR the color of Mercury silver because “Mercury is very hard to catch!” I heard he’d also been boasting about his victory in the days leading up to this year’s race, saying he’d bet his Ferrari he’d win again. I wonder who has the keys now?
  • It’s a day late, but these are some interesting looks at the Milano-Sanremo course - first from an Italian writing about “how we look to her,” and next a look at just the Cipressa and Poggio up close. In 2004, we drove over the Poggio when we were in Sanremo for the day, and it’s been exciting ever since seeing it during the race. That second article brings it all back.
  • From the Milano-Sanremo teams presentation, the picture (halfway down or so) of the elderly woman who waited in line a half-hour to see Mario Cipollini is priceless.
  • More talk about the Montreal-Boston cycling race this year, with New Hampshire hosting two stages.
  • If you want to get a jump on your Olympic pin-collecting for 2008, here’s the road cycling pin for Beijing.
  • If you think being a superstar in the cycling world always makes life easy, you’d be wrong. Scroll down to the very bottom of this page to find out how, just after winning Tirreno-Adriatico, Andreas Klöden ended up sleeping for three hours with teammate Matthias Kessler.
